Scope and Content Note
This series, consisting of two volumes listing inmates admitted to the prison, was compiled by prison physicians who examined inmates upon arrival.
The records were created pursuant to a law of 1849 requiring all prison medical officers to keep a daily record of all inmate admittances. The register contains the following information: inmate number; name; date received (into Clinton prison); from where; county where convicted; crime committed; term of sentence; expiration of short time; physical description (age, color, weight, height); occupation; marital status; habits (liquor or tobacco); vaccinated (yes or no); general health (good, fair or poor); special ailments; deformities; address and name of relatives; and date discharged.
In addition there are two categories entitled "hospital record" and previous condition," but the data entered under these subject headings is not relevant to the title. Under hospital record are entries: factory, hospital, observation, miscellaneous or Sick Company. Under previous convictions is entered the religion of the inmate.
