Summary
- This series consists of addresses by Education Department Commissioners. Included are addresses, drafts and notes by Andrew S. Draper. Many of which were presented at school commencements and before community organizations. Topics include education trends, the role of American Universities, the functioning and purpose of schools, school curricula, New York's role in education and historical topics, such as the settlement of the Alabama claims, the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, and the Civil and Revolutionary War.

Administrative History
During the period of these addresses and articles, Draper occupied a number of public and private positions within and without New York State, including: member of the law firm of Draper and Chester, 1871-1886; member of Albany Board of Education, 1879-1881; New York State Assemblyman, 1881; member of the State Normal College Board, 1882-1886; New York State Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1886-1892; Superintendent of Instruction of Cleveland, Ohio public schools, 1892-1894; President of the University of Illinois, 1894-1904; and New York State Commissioner of Education, 1904-1913.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of copies of addresses by Andrew S. Draper. Some are accompanied by drafts and notes.
These addresses and articles, many of which were presented at school commencements and before a variety of community organizations, primarily concern such topics as trends in education, the role of American Universities, the functioning and purpose of schools, school curricula, and New York's role in education. A number of these addresses and articles deal with historical topics, such as the settlement of the Alabama claims, the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, and the Civil War and Revolutionary War periods. At the beginning of the series is a folder containing lists of Draper's published works through 1911 and several miscellaneous papers, including a list of books for a district library, a newspaper article about Draper's resignation as President of the University of Illinois, a letter to Draper from the Redpath Lyceum Bureau, an unidentified list of names, Draper's membership cards from the Grant Club, and membership certificates from the Independent Order of Good Templars and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
Each address or article is in an envelope labelled with the title or subject, place and date of presentation or publication, and a number.
