This series is arranged by division of the Erie Canal. Volumes 1-4 contain bills from the Eastern Division; volume 5 is a bill of material from the Middle Division; and volumes 6-9 contain bills from the Western Division.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of bills of materials that were used in construction and repair projects on state canals. The materials referred to in these volumes are generally timber, iron, and planking. The volumes contain information in a tabular format that lists name and location of project on which the materials were used (e.g. Bridge at Buffalo St., Rochester); number of pieces used; date used; number of pieces and part of the structure for which the material was used (e.g. 6 pieces under the arch, 28 suspension rods); type of material (e.g. hemlock, pine); dimensions; and total costs. Some volumes contain cross-section profiles of the canal that include measurements of excavation and embankment work.
