Scope and Content Note
This series contains a book of accounts for "labor expended and materials furnished on contract" for enlarging and improving the Erie Canal (L. 1835, Ch. 274; L. 1838, Ch. 269), and for repairs made (L. 1843, Ch. 30). Accounts include a statement of location of the contract (lock or section), the name of the contractor, and the type of work or material furnished with the quantity and values of same. Some statements are followed by a copy of the certificate of the resident engineer verifying that the statement is correct, and by a note of payment by the Canal Commissioner.
Both large and small contracts are included, and date from before, during, and after the temporary suspension of work on the enlargement of the canal, 1843-1846. The contracts appear to be for the first Division of the Erie Canal between Cohoes and Mohawk.
At the front of the volume is an alphabetical index to contractors. At the end of the volumes are regulations adopted by the Canal Commissioners regarding a survey of proposed canal enlargement; other resolutions of the Canal Commissioners; and copies of reports and accounts submitted to the Canal Commissioners by the Chief Engineer for First Division relating to enlargement of the canal, 1835-1839.
