Scope and Content Note
The volume records examinations of children between the ages of 2 and 16 years residing in county poorhouses and almshouses at the time of a special census. The volume apparently holds one examination form completed for each child residing in each county facility.
For each county the form shows who conducted/submitted the record, with the date; county of the facility; examination number (from as few as none to as many as 10); and answers to a series of 26 questions on child identity, personal/family history, siblings, economic circumstances of parents, moral character, mental health, causes of dependency, and the likelihood of future independence. Often a section for remarks provides additional information.
