Summary
- Education Law, section 216, empowers the State Board of Regents to incorporate colleges, schools, libraries, museums, and other education corporations. The incorporation document is called a charter. This series documents the incorporation and/or dissolution of educational corporations formed by the Regents. Administrative History
Education Law, section 216, empowers the Board of Regents to incorporate colleges, schools, libraries, museums, and other education corporations. The incorporation document is called a charter. The same provision also requires a corporation being formed under the Not-For-Profit Corporation Law or the Business Law to obtain the approval of the Regents if it is educational in purpose.
Scope and Content Note
This series documents the incorporation and/or dissolution of educational corporations formed by the Regents. Typically a file contains a petition for a provisional or absolute charter, a copy of the Regents resolution granting or revoking a charter, and correspondence and amendments to a charter. Files occasionally include background material demonstrating the educational character of the applicant, and/or documents relating to the distribution of assets of a corporation being dissolved.
18458-06, 18458-07: These accretions complete an alphabetical run of charters from 1940-2004. Charters for organizations A through L are located in accretion 18458-06 and for M through Z in accretion 18458-07.
18458-98, 18458-14: These accretions consist of "closed" charter files (i.e., files for those institutions whose charters were either surrendered or revoked).
