Scope and Content Note
The records and briefs in this series were submitted to the New York State Court of Appeals upon appeal of a lower court judgment. They usually contain: Record or appendix, Plaintiff's briefs, and Defendant's briefs. Other documents, such as Reply brief(s) and Amicus brief(s), may also be included. Together, these records document the legal history of a case, often including lower court transcripts, necessary formal applications, arguments for and against legal issues, testimony, and exhibits.
J2002-92: This accretion consists of 448 volumes (1986-1987) of cases and briefs on appeal and 119 volumes (1986) of cases decided without hearing oral arguments ("sua sponte merits" or SSMs). The two types of cases are filed and bound separately. Case contents are similar but the SSMs often contain additional documents not found in the regular cases.
J2002-94: This accretion consists of 631 volumes (1988-1989) of cases and briefs on appeal. SSM volumes for 1988-1989 are held by the Court of Appeals.
J2002-99: This accretion consists of 963 volumes (1990-1993) of cases and briefs on appeal and 110 volumes (1991-1993) of cases decided without hearing oral arguments. SSM volumes for 1990 are held by the Court of Appeals.
J2002-99A: The accretion consists of published materials which were trial court exhibits in the following cases heard and decided by the Court of Appeals: People v. Finkelstein, et. al., 9 N.Y. 2d 342 (1961); People v. Fritch, et. al., 13 N.Y. 2d 119 (1963); Larkin v. G. P. Putnam's Sons, 14 N.Y. 2d 399 (1964); and Bookcase, Inc., v. Broderick, 18 N.Y. 2d 71 (1966).
J2002-06: This accretion consists of 80 volumes of cases decided without hearing oral arguments and 515 volumes of cases and briefs on appeals for the years 1994 and 1995. The two types of cases are bound and filed separately.
