Scope and Content Note
This series contains correspondence and memorandums between the zoologist or assistant zoologist and other scientists, collectors, specimen suppliers, private citizens and the State Museum Director.
Prior to 1901 the correspondence is primarily that of the State Museum Director pertaining to the zoology collections. Later subjects include: preparation of a checklist of New York birds ("Ornithological Letters"), acquisition of museum specimens, field collecting or observation activities, research projects concerning various animals, preparation of scientific papers, exchange of information with scientists at other institutions, preparation of zoological exhibits for the Museum, and questions from private citizens regarding the characteristics and life cycles of various animals.
Included is correspondence of the following persons holding the position of Zoologist: Marcus S. Farr (Assistant Zoologist), 1900: Frederick C. Paulmier, 1901-1906 (Assistant in Zoology), 1901-1904: George H. Chadwick, 1906-1907: Frank H. Ward, 1908-1910: Willard G. Van Name, 1910-1915: Sherman C. Bishop, 1916-1928: and Walter J. Schoonmaker (Assistant Zoologist), 1928-1932.
