Scope and Content Note
Estimates and proposed expenditures for canal repairs were submitted every thirty or sixty days by superintendents of repair to the Canal Commissioner in charge of a division of the canal system (or, after 1876, to the Superintendent and Public Works). The format varies, but each estimate always gives location of work, names of structures or works, and estimated cost of labor and materials. Each estimate includes the certificate of the Canal Commissioner or Superintendent of Public Works that the estimated expenditures are necessary and correct. The records are sorted by canal but unarranged beyond that.
