Administrative History
Chapter 250, Laws of 1822 stipulated that the secretary of state, surveyor general, attorney general, comptroller and treasurer "calculate and ascertain the aggregate amount or whole number of votes given at such election for governor, lieutenant governor, for senators or for representatives in the congress of the United States."
Scope and Content Note
This series contains the final voting results for elections held between 1828 and 1913. This series was generated pursuant to Chapter 250 of the Laws of 1822. The later volumes in this series contain results for the offices of the chief and associate judges of the Court of Appeals, justices of the Supreme Court, judges of city and county courts, attorney-general inspector of state prisons, treasurer and state engineer and surveyor. In addition, some of the volumes contain minutes of meetings held by the state Board of Canvass. Although the format varies in each volume, the information contained remains basically the same.
For each office being contested, the results are broken down into districts (either senate or congressional depending on the election) with each county listed under its appropriate district. The names of the major candidates are then listed under the office for which they are running, and the votes received are listed under each candidate. Also, there is a section entitled "Scattering Votes," which recounts the votes received by minor candidates (candidates who received only a handful of votes). Volumes 1, 3, and 4 are indexed; the other volumes are not.
