Administrative History
The Canal Contracting Board was created in 1854 (Chapter 329), and consisted of the Canal Commissioner, the Comptroller and the State Engineer and Surveyor. This law transferred to the Contracting Board the power and duties previously held and performed by the Canal Commissioners in respect to contracts. The Contracting Board operated until 1870 when Chapter 55 abolished the body. Not until 1881 with the passage of Chapter 569 were the powers of the contracting board transferred to the Superintendent of Public Works.
