Administrative History
The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation was a subsidiary of the Empire State Development Corporation responsible for the redevelopment and ongoing operations of the 150 acres of Governors Island that the federal government transferred to New York State in 2003; the National Park Service was responsible for the island's remaining 22 acres, which in 2006 were designated the Governors Island National Monument. The corporation was overseen by a board of directors appointed in equal numbers by the governor of New York State and the mayor of the City of New York.
In April 2010, Governor David A. Paterson and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg entered into an agreement stating that the City of New York would assume sole responsibility for operations, planning, and redevelopment of the 150 acres that had been jointly administered by the state and the city. As a result, the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation ceased to exist; its functions were assumed by the Trust for Governors Island, a municipal entity.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of archival copies of the publicly accessible website of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation.
B2092-07: This accretion consists of a copy of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation site produced on December 26, 2006, shortly before Governor George E. Pataki (1995-2006) left office. It contains a listing of corporation board members, press releases (2003-2006), requests for proposals and expressions of interest (2005-2006), information about the history of Governors Island, visitor information, and recent and archival photographs of the island. Researchers should note that, owing to the structure of the live site and the limitations of Web archiving technology, the navigational links on the left side of each page do not always work properly; using the Web browser's back button to return to the copy's home page and then clicking on the desired link will usually resolve this problem.
B2092-08: This accretion consists of a copy of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation site produced on May 21, 2008, shortly after the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008). Some of the information contained in this copy is also present in the December 26, 2006 copy, but this copy includes newer press releases (2007-2008) and requests for proposals and expressions of interest (2006-2008. Researchers should note that, owing to the structure of the live site and the limitations of Web archiving technology, most of the navigational links on the left side of each page do not work properly; as a result, some site content, including the historical information and photograph gallery that were successfully captured in 2006, cannot be accessed.
