Administrative History
David E. E. Mix was a surveyor and civil engineer who was employed by the state on several occasions to copy documents and compile catalogs of maps and field notes relating to state lands.
After Mix's death in 1893, the legislature appropriated $2,000 in 1895 for the purchase of Mix's collection of original Holland Land Company field notes, charts, and maps to ensure that the state would have original records concerning western New York lands. The records were then deposited in the office of the State Engineer and Surveyor, who was responsible for the state's land records.
Scope and Content Note
These volumes contain field notes of land belonging to the Holland Land Company, the Ogden Land Company, the Connecticut Tract, and Andrew Craigie's holdings. Most or all of the land surveyed was in Genesee, Erie, and Orleans counties. The volumes provide: general remarks on the landscape and land quality; township and/or range number; lot number; section number (Volume 3); acreage of lots; brief descriptions of lots; diagrams of lots (Volumes 1, 2); measurements of lots; and valuations of lots per acre (volumes 2, 4). Volume 3 appears to be an original; the others were apparently copied from the originals for David E. E. Mix.
Custodial History
Mix's library of land records concerning New York State land was purchased by the state in 1895, following his death (1893). The volumes had previously been labeled as volumes 225, 226, 231, and 233 and were listed as such in "Catalog of Maps and Papers in the Land Bureau of the State Engineer's Department" in the 1910 annual report of the State Engineer and Surveyor.
