Franz S. Leichter (1930- ) was first elected to the Senate in 1974 as a Democrat-Liberal from the 28th Senate District, after having served for six years in the Assembly. His senatorial district encompassed portions of the Chelsea, Clinton, West Side, Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of Manhattan (New York County).
Senator Leichter was particularly active in the fields of mass transit, consumer banking, taxation, and governmental ethics.
Scope and Content Note
The series consists of "Issue Files" as well as press releases and constituent newletters/questionnaires that span the legislative career of Franz S. Leichter.
Issue files are subdivided into "Statewide Issues" and "District Issues" and consist primarily of correspondence, reports, memoranda, copies of testimony, news clippings, and background material.
Press releases are limited to those issued directly from the senator's office. The newsletters or questionnaires are copies of material mailed directly to district voters to inform them of the senator's legislative activities and to survey opinion on a variety of current and/or ongoing issues of public interest.
