Scope and Content Note
This single item map is an unannotated whiteprint copy of the East Islip fire district in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County. It is possible that the map was used as a reference in preparing the Suffolk County boundary maps found in series A4218, County Fire Protection District Map Files, which it predates by ten years. The maps were prepared by county officials for the Temporary State Commission on Fire Laws, to aid its investigation of laws related to fire protection and prevention services in towns, villages, and fire districts.
Instructions found in that series state that maps such as this one could be used in preparation of the annotated boundary maps required by the commission, but they were not the accepted final product.
Entitled "Map of East Islip Fire District," the map has a ruled scale, a legend, and was prepared by Peter J. Van Weele. It is dated July 16, 1943 and measures 86 x 104 cm within neat lines. The code "M/677/-" appears on the map's border; its origin and significance are unknown.
