Administrative History
The Central Pine Barrens Joint Policy and Planning Commission was established in 1993 to develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive land use plan that would protect the ecosystem, surface water, and groundwater of the Central Pine Barrens region of Suffolk County. The commission has the power to approve or disapprove any proposed development that may affect the region as a whole or involves portions of the region that have been designated critical resource areas.
In addition, the commission supports scientific study of the ecology of the Central Pine Barrens and promotes recreational activities within the region. It has also established three citizen councils designed to coordinate law enforcement, protected lands management, and fire control activities within the Central Pine Barrens region.
