Scope and Content Note
This series contains drafts or typescripts prepared by or for the state historian and apparently considered for publication. The bulk of the series consists of a preface and four articles intended to be published about 1911 as an introduction to the published papers of colonial military officer and Indian negotiator Sir William Johnson. The first volumes of Johnson's papers appeared in 1921 with different introductory material prepared by a subsequent state historian.
The unused articles are: "Preface" by James Austen Holden; "Sir William Johnson as a Man" by Robert W. Chambers; "Sir William Johnson as a Patron of the Arts and Letters, and a Pioneer in Religion" by the Reverend Wolcott W. Ellsworth; "Sir William Johnson as Businessman and Empire Builder" by Richard E. Day; and "Sir William Johnson as a Military Man" by James Austen Holden.
Also included in the series are: two typescript versions of a biography of George Clinton, first governor of New York, by Augustus H. Van Buren; and three manuscript lists of records in the British Public Record Office and British Museum pertaining to the colony and state of New York, ca. 1660-1860s. These lists were apparently compiled by Richard E. Day.
