Scope and Content Note
This series consists of cover letters which had accompanied drafts made payable to the Comptroller's Office for the payment of interest on loans made to various school districts and villages out of the Common School Fund.
The records contain the amount for which the draft was made and in some cases the amount of interest being charged. The Common School Fund was first organized pursuant to a law of 1805 which authorized the sale of 500,000 acres of lands in order to establish a common fund to meet New York's educational needs. A law of 1808 authorized the Comptroller to loan monies to towns and school districts from the school fund.
