Scope and Content Note
This series consists of copies of annual, quarterly, and monthly financial statements prepared and sent to the State Comptroller by the institution. The volume label reads "Statements Sent to the Comptroller" and carries the names of comptrollers F.P. Olcott (appointed 1877) and Jas. W. Wadsworth (appointed 1879), to whom the accountings were sent.
The authorizing legislation for the state owned and operated institution, Chapter 587 of the Laws of 1865, required that full and complete records of its operations be kept. The institution received regular appropriations from the state for maintenance and operation. Also, Chapter 744 of the Laws of 1867 and Chapter 463 of the Laws of 1873 provided for the institution's management and handling of county support charges for indigent students.
The statements provide summary information on receipts from the state treasury, counties, and sales of products manufactured at the institution, and disbusements for wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment.
Beginning on page 90, the volume also includes monthly reports of accounts for the period 1878-1881, from which the statements to the comptroller apparently were compiled. These accounts are grouped according to the following headings: cash; state treasurer; farm; broom shop; provisions; miscellaneous sources; merchandise; beadworks; and counties.
Also included in this series are unbound copies of some of these statements and account summaries.
