Scope and Content Note
This series consists of writs of habeas corpus and returns thereto filed apparently in Supreme Court Clerk's office in Albany. Almost all the writs concern defendants imprisoned under civil process. However, a few writs from 1804-1806 and one from 1825 concern defendants in criminal cases.
Custodial History
The Court of Appeals transferred these records to the State Archives in 1982. They became estranged for some unknown reason until they were identified and accessioned as part of the 11th floor renovation and relocation project.
