Scope and Content Note
In 1954 (Ch. 307) the State Legislature established a new thirty-eight grade salary schedule for the classified civil service. Records in this series relate mostly to the salary reallocations and position reclassifications carried out in accord with the 1954 schedule.
These include the following: correspondence and memoranda concerning Division policy and practice, inquires from agencies, requests for reallocations and reclassifications, salary schedules, lists of salary conversions and reclassifications, and a manual for appointing officers. These records give detailed information on the 1954 salary conversion and its results.
The series also includes annual salary reports, classification specifications, and miscellaneous files. The salary reports give detailed salary data on selected State positions and aggregated statistics on salaries in State service including graphics showing trends and comparisons with the private sector. Position specifications, mostly from the 1950s, consist of descriptions of the duties of all State classified positions. Miscellaneous files contain correspondence and memoranda relating to general classification and compensation matters such as changes in salary rates, legislation affecting State salaries, and the position reclassification.
