Scope and Content Note
The series consists of opinion reports and appendices prepared for two court cases involving Indian land claims against New York State, heard by the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York. The court cases are: The Cayuga Indian Nation of New York, et. al., plantiffs, and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma, plaintiff-intervenor, and the U.S.A., plaintiff-intervenor, v. George E. Pataki, et. al., defendants; and The Seneca Nation of Indians, plaintiffs, and the Tonawanda Band of Seneca Indians, plaintiff-intervenor, v. The State of New York, et. al., defendants.
Reports were authored by consulting expert Dr. Alexander von Gernet and submitted in September, 1999. They are entitled "The Historical Context of the Cayuga Treaties with the State of New York" (8 volumes) and "Aboriginal Use and Occupancy of the Niagara River Environs" (7 volumes).
