A committee of three citizens under the chairmanship of Henry T. Heald was appointed in December 1958 by the Commissioner of Education to inquire into charges by New York City's Comptroller of waste and extravagance in school construction. The committee's report, School Construction in New York City, was published in 1959 by the State Education Department.
Scope and Content Note
Correspondence, published and unpublished reports, press releases, clippings, memoranda, meeting minutes, notes, charts, statistical tables, and blueprints used by the New York City School Construction Inquiry in its investigation of charges of waste in New York City school construction. This series provides information on the conduct of the commissioner's inquiry on the planning, designs, and construction of schools in New York City during the 1950s.
Research files: materials collected by the Inquiry include copies of correspondence, minutes, press releases, and memoranda submitted by the city Board of Education (ca. 1949-1959); published reports, pamphlets and newspaper clippings (ca. 1951-1959); and blueprints of school plans and construction details.
