Administrative History
Janet Hill Gordon, Republican, was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1947-1958, representing Chenango county, and then served in the State Senate from 1959-1962, representing Madison, Otsego, Chenango, and Cortland counties. She also served as a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1967. While serving in the State Assembly, Janet Hill Gordon was a member of the Revision, Conservation, General Laws, Local Finance, and Panel Institutions committees. While in the State Senate, she served on the Agriculture, Civil Service and Pensions, Conservation, National Defense and Military Affairs, Public Health, and Taxation committees. She was also co-chair of the Gordon-Peterson Committee to Investigate Family Laws, chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Matrimonial and Family Laws, and member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Imitation Food Products.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of the Assembly and Senate records of Janet Hill Gordon divided into two subseries: Publications and Files. Both subseries concentrate heavily on the topics of Matrimony, Adoption, Juvenile Delinquency, Family Courts, Divorce, Child Custody, and Social Agencies working with families and children. The subseries also document the various committees on which Janet Hill Gordon served while in the New York State Senate and Assembly.
Subseries 1: Publications, 1951-1967: Organized by the major topics including: New York State pamphlets, government documents, child and family pamphlets, and miscellaneous publications. Law books, published committee reports, hearing publications, and essays are included within each of these topics.
Subseries 2: Files, 1949-1967: Contains correspondence, memoranda, hearing transcripts, bills, committee minutes, and other records documenting: Acts of Legislation, Education, Hearings, Matrimonial and Family Laws, and the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1967.

Custodial History
These records were donated to Syracuse University's Manuscripts and Special Collections in 1967 by Janet Hill Gordon. They were transferred to the New York State Archives in June 2006 and accessioned during the summer of 2007.
