Scope and Content Note
These journals, or diaries, contain brief daily entries, with occasional gaps of a day or two, for the period from 1849 to 1881 and for 1883. There are no records for the year 1882 or for the years from 1884 through 1888. Entries for 1889 are sporadic and for the most part report only visits to the institution by members of the Board of Managers.
Typical daily entries contain information about some of the following topics: inmate admissions and discharges; escapes by inmates; institution population counts; holiday events; Board of Managers meetings; Board of Managers attendance at Sunday service (1849 to 1878 only); and special topics such as Civil War service enlistments of former inmates.
