Administrative History
The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) sponsors a variety of public events throughout the year at parks and sites under its management and elsewhere. These programs are meant to entertain and educate the people of New York. Events include art and historical programs involving the Office's cultural artifacts, as well as recreational and sporting events for all athletes of any age or ability.
Formerly a program of OPRHP, the Empire State Games are conducted as a series of annual Olympic-style competitions for amateur athletes from all over New York State. The Games are held in both summer and winter, and include two additional series for physically challenged and senior competitor classes. In 2009 and 2011, the Empire State Summer Games were cancelled due to a lack of funding from the State of New York. Since its establishment in 1978, the Summer Games, in particular, have expanded to become one of the largest and most extensive amateur state-sponsored athletic programs in the nation.
Scope and Content Note
This series contains the results, raw results and participant rosters for the Summer and Winter competitions of the Empire State Games. Results listed simply as "Results" means that they are mostly tabulated and processed results printed out in organized lists. Results listed as "Raw Results" are mostly unprocessed results. The score keeping varies from sport to sport. Some results may be tabulated, while others may still be in handwritten notes. Score cards may be included.
The records document the participation of athletes from three age divisions - Scholastic for athletes aged 12-17, Open for athletes aged 18-29, and Masters for athletes aged 30-75 - who competed from the following six regions of the state: Adirondack, Central, Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York, and Western. Results from the Winter Games held in Lake Placid, NY, utilizing the facilities built for the 1980 Winter Olympics are included for the following years: 1985-1994, 1998, 2003-2008. There are no Summer Empire State Games results for 1980, 1981, and 1982.
Results and rosters for particular sports may be located with other events. For example, Nordic combined events are generally located with the Ski Jumping results. "Athletics" is the term generally used for Track & Field events in the Scholastic & Open Divisions. "Track" is used for Track & Fields events in the Masters Division. "Yachting" was the preferred term from 1982-1989. From 1990-2010 the preferred term was "Sailing."
