Scope and Content Note
This series consists of lists of expenditures for building and repairs of each of the 12 state normal schools and 4 state prisons that were in existence by 1896 in New York State. It appears that these records were generated in order to supply data for James A. Roberts' 1897 Comptroller's report to the New York State Legislature. In this report, Roberts tried to show public money investment in these institutions.
The records concerning the prisons provide information on the year in which an expenditure or repair was effected, a description of the repair or expenditure and the amount of money spent. The records on the normal schools indicate only the year and the amount of money which was spent on "repairs, improvements, library, textbooks, apparatus, etc." There is no detailed explanation of on what the money was spent.
