Administrative History
The Office of Communications, formerly the Office of Public Information, operates within the New York State Education Department's Office of Operations and Management Services. According to its mission statement, the office develops and coordinates the message of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and NYSED; disseminates information to critical audiences including NYSED employees, the education field, the public, the media and state government officials; maintains relationships with other communicators within NYSED and the education field; and reaches new and existing audiences more effectively by deploying new communications tools and media.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of press releases created by the Office of Communications, then called the Office of Public Information. Most of the releases date from the tenure of Gordon M. Ambach as Commissioner of Education. Many detail decisions made by Commissioner Ambach and the Board of Regents. Some files include draft versions of press releases, with handwritten edits. Also, some press releases are filed with reports and other informational material sent with the releases.
Topics frequently covered in the releases include adult education; legislative budget recommendations; the creation of Regents Competency Tests; scheduling of professional examinations and Regents External Degree exams; museum events and chartering of new cultural heritage organizations; school integration; Regents meetings and regional conferences; and international programs. Also included are "back to school" packets, consisting of collections of press releases timed to the beginning of the school year. These releases generally announce new policies affecting students at the school level.
