Scope and Content Note
Staff of the office of the Superintendent of Public Works used this volume to maintain a record of public advertisements for proposals to undertake canal construction contracts pursuant to Chapter 147 of the Laws of 1903 (Barge Canal Act) and supplementary acts. Each entry includes contract number and type of contract (typically Barge Canal or Terminal); year and chapter of legislation under which contract was enabled; an affixed copy of the advertisement as it appeared in the newspapers; and a list of newspapers in which the advertisement was published, including cost to the state for each advertising run.
Newspaper advertisements indicated the date and time by which proposals were due at the office of the Superintendent of Public Works in Albany; contract number, location of work, and canal section (if applicable); applicable contract plan sheet numbers; and in some instances, additional contract terms and submission instructions. Scattered notices of the opening and closing of the canal system were also recorded in the volume.
