The Nutrition Watch Committee was created in 1982 at the request of Governor Hugh L. Carey. The committee was formed in order to "monitor the adequacy of people's nutritional status, to guide [the State of New York] in channeling our food resources to those who need them most, particularly to pregnant women and children, and to direct our efforts to educate our citizens about proper nutrition."
Scope and Content Note
This series contains records of the Nutrition Watch Committee. Included in these documents is a historical perspective of nutrition in New York from 1917 to the 1970s (organized by decade); agendas and meeting minutes; forms pertaining to travel and automobile expenses; outlined plans for developing a Nutritional Surveillance System in New York State; and graphs, data, and statistics. Presentations given before the committee, such as "Nutrition: What is the Problem?" by Dr. Malden Nesheim, Director of the Division of Nutritional Science at Cornell University, are also found.
Noteworthy individuals whose names appear in these documents include Alan Pifer, Co-Chairperson; Dr. David Axelrod, M.D., Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health; and Harold McLean, Regional Administrator, Food and Nutrition Service, USDA.
