Scope and Content Note
These reports summarize inspections of the institution conducted in accordance with institution bylaws by the Board of Visitors (called the Board of Managers until 1927).
Reports from 1902 through the mid-1910s provide information on such topics as: cleanliness and neatness of grounds; physical condition and maintenance of the buildings; quality of instruction in schools and shops; attitude and behavior of inmates in schools, shops, and religious services; general state of discipline at the institution; general health of inmates; expenditures and the need for more funding; progress of construction at the institution's new site; agricultural products raised; annual exhibitions; recommendations for needed repairs, supplies, facilities; and (beginning in 1911) their cost.
Reports in the late 1910s contain less narrative description, and by 1918 consisted of a front sheet providing valuation of work done in shops; number of inmates received and paroled; population of the institution and farm production figures; and summary sheets and itemized lists of condemned articles and their costs. Only the front sheets exist for reports from July 1926 to April 1936.
