Scope and Content Note
These volumes contain accounts with attorneys practicing in the Supreme Court of Judicature in Albany, Utica, and Geneva. The heading of each account gives the name of the attorney. Though the volumes are termed "ledger," only debits (no credits) are entered. The debits are for filing documents, sealing writs, certifying copies, searching for judgments unsatisfied, etc. The date and fees charged are given for each entry. Names of parties represented are not included in the first ledger, which is called "No. 2." The second ledger gives in each entry brief titles of causes. The clerks of the Supreme Court were required to keep accounts of fees collected by them by legislation of 1833 and 1839 (no previous acts regarding accounts of clerks are found).
