Summary
- This series consists of referral memoranda and file copies of outgoing correspondence created by the office of the Commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Much of the correspondence was prepared at the request of the Executive Chamber in response to letters addressed to the governor by federal, state, and local government officials and private citizens. Correspondence addresses all aspects of the administration of criminal justice in New York State, as well as federal-state cooperation in crime reduction programs.

Scope and Content Note
This series consists of referral memoranda and file copies of outgoing correspondence created by the offices of Division of Criminal Justice Services Commissioners John J. Poklemba (1987-1991) and Richard H. Girgenti (1991-1995). Correspondence relates to all aspects of the administration of criminal justice in New York State, as well as federal-state cooperation in crime reduction programs. Much of the correspondence was prepared at the request of the Executive Chamber in response to letters addressed to the governor by federal, state, and local government officials and private citizens.
Specific issues discussed in the correspondence include capital punishment, gun control, illegal drug sales and distribution, violence in schools, missing and exploited children, juvenile justice, recidivism, shock incarceration, candidates for county sheriff offices, newly published literature in the field, and the December 1993 mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad.
